Amitriptyline HCl Tablets

Amitriptyline HCl is a tricyclic antidepressant used to treat behavioral problems in dogs and cats. Dogs are given amitriptyline for separation anxiety, fear of noises and anxiety. Cats are treated with amitriptyline for urinating out of the litter box (inappropriate urination), urine spraying and anxiety. Medication alone will not solve behavioral problems, but should be combined with behavioral modification techniques.

Amitriptyline acts by increasing the levels of serotonin and other neurotransmitters in the brain.

Dosage:
  • Dogs: The usual dose is 0.5-2 mg/pound every 8-12 hours.
  • Cats: The usual dose is 5-10 mg as a single dose once a day.
Side Effects: Side effects may include drowsiness, loss of appetite, urinary retention, dry eyes, increase is seizure activity in epileptic pets.

Use with caution in pregnant or lactating pets, and pets with diabetes mellitus, kidney disease, liver disease, hyperthyroidism or epilepsy.

Amitriptyline may react with anticholinergics, antithyroid drugs, monoamine oxidase inhibitors and cimetidine.
