Flea Allergy Dermatitis

Flea allergy dermatitis (FAD) is a common skin condition seen in pets as a result of a hypersensitivity or allergic reaction to proteins in the saliva of fleas. Pet owners may not find any signs of fleas or may notice a significant number of fleas on their pet as well as significant amount of flea dirt.

Signs and symptoms include:

Excessive scratching
Compulsive biting
Folliculitis and furunculosis may be present
Thickening of the skin and development of nodules
chewing (corncob biting)
papules (pink or red swelling on the skin)
crusting
alopecia
the rump area and backs of the thighs are most severely affected

Treatment:

Ideally, treatment should begin with a topical adulticide to stop fleas from biting.
In addition, be sure to utilize products that quickly kill adult fleas as well as flea larvae to reduce infestation.
Maintain use of a topical adulticide year round or as directed by your veterinarian to control exposure to fleas.
Treat areas where pets spend significant time.
Secondary bacterial infections may require treatment with oral antibiotics.
Anti-Inflammatory medications may be prescribed to control the inflammation.
