Description

Trazodone HCl

Behavioral Calming

Trazodone is an atypical antidepressant commonly used in dogs for chronic anxiety-related problems in dogs, including thunderstorms or fireworks, and activity restrictions (cage rest) after surgery. It is often used in combination with other drugs to help reduce anxiety. As with other anti-anxiety medications, Trazodone should be used in conjunction with a behavior modification plan.

Phobias are difficult to treat, They require both desensitization and counter-conditioning to the various elements of storms, which are difficult to replicate. Behavior improvement should be anticipated rather than a complete cure.

Administration
All dosages are for regular tablets (not extended-release). May be given with food or on a empty stomach. May take up to 2 weeks to achieve its calming effect, especially when used alone. Trazodone can be used alone or in conjunction with other anxiolytics on a routine basis (up to three times daily) or on a as needed basis. Starting dose is often 2-5 mg/kg every 24 hours, and then titrated upwards every 10-14 days to a dosage of to 3-5 mg-kg every 8-24 hours.

Weight Initiation oral dosage
  • 10 kg . . . 25 mg every 24 hours
  • 11-20 kg . . . 50 mg every 24 hours
  • 21 kg and greater . . . 100 mg every 24 hours
  • Doses may be titrated upwards every 10 to 14 days to a maximum of double the recommended dose. Doses for dogs 41 kg and greater may be tritrated to a maximum of 300 mg once daily.
  • Doses can vary from every 8 hours to every 12 hours.

Trazodone, a Serotonin Antagonist-Reuptake Inhibitor, boosts serotonin levels. Use with caution in combination with other medications that raise serotonin levels. Trazodone is contraindicated in patients receiving MAO inhibitors (including Amitraz and possibly selegiline), glaucoma, history of seizures or urinary retention and severe liver disease.
