Cyproheptadine

Cyproheptadine HCl is an antihistamine used to control the symptoms of allergies and asthma in dogs and cats. Cyproheptdine is also used as an appetite stimulant for cats that are ill, anorexic or undergoing chemotherapy.

When Cyproheptadine is being used to stimulate appetite, it may take two to three days for the drug to reach full effect.

Cyproheptadine is also used in some cases of inappropriate urine-spraying behavior by cats.

Dosage:
  • Allergic disorders, Antihistamine
    • Dog: 0.3-2 mg/kg orally every 8 to 12 hours
    • Cat: 0.5-1.1 mg/kg orally every 24 hours
  • Appetite Stimulant, Asthma
    • Cat: 2 mg orally every 12-24 hours
Side Effects:
Sedation, dry mucous membranes and increased heart rate.

Caution:
Use with caution in animals suffering from glaucoma, heart disease, prostate gland enlargement.
