Uses
Methimazole is an antithyroid medication used in the treatment of
hyperthyroidism.
How this medicine should be used
Methimazole is not FDA approved for use in veterinary medicine; however, it is
commonly accepted for veterinarians to use this medication in cats. The usual
dose in cats is 5mg per cat every 8-12 hours. Blood tests are repeated every 3-4
weeks until the proper maintenance dose is reached, then blood testing is
repeated every 3-6 months. The medication is needed for life. If the medication
is discontinued, the symptoms will reappear.
Side effects
Side effects of methimazole may include lack of appetite, vomiting, rash, hives,
itching, edema and drowsiness
Special precautions
This medication should not be used in animals allergic to it. Do not use in
patients with liver disease, autoimmune disease or blood abnormalities. Do not
use in pregnant or nursing animals.
In the event of an overdose
Contact your veterinarian or veterinary emergency room. Symptoms of overdose may
include blood disorders or liver toxicity.
How should I store this medication
Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed. Store tablets
at room temperature away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom).
Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed. Keep this
medication away from children and pets.
