Tramadol is a pain reliever used to treat moderate to severe pain in dogs and
cats. Tramadol can also be used in combination with non-steroidal
anti-inflammatory drugs in dogs. This analgesic is used for severe post-surgical
pain and for chronic pain like cancer or degenerative osteoarthritis. It can
also be used as a cough suppressant.
Tramadol works by decreasing the brain's perception and response to pain by
inhibiting the reuptake of norepinephrine and serotonin. This centrally
acting analgesic is not related to opioids.
