Proin ER Tablets
Phenylpropanolamine Extended-Release For Urinary Incontinence
Proin ER Tablets provides the same proven efficacy as Proin Chewable Tablets for the long-term management of urinary incontinence associated with urethral sphincter incompetence in spayed dogs. Proin ER and Proin Chewable help control urinary incontinence (inability of the bladder to hold urine) by tightening the urethral sphincter to prevent leaking. Many times
urine leaking will appear as a wet area on the bedding or as a wet genital area.
By controlling incontinence, Proin ER and Proin also help relieve associated odor and the dermatitis from urine scalding in the genital area. Proin PR offers innovative release technology providing controlled release that ensures steady absorption throughout the day.
Phenylpropanolamine (PPA) is a sympathomimetic agent and is a chemical analogue of the endogenous sympathomimetic amines. Proin acts by increasing resting urethral tone in dogs. It acts by direct stimulation of the smooth muscle of the internal urethral sphincter.
Proin ER and Proin provide different absorption rates to ensure dosages can be administered either in multiple dosages during the day (Proin) or once a day (Proin ER). Proin Chewable Tablets release the medication into the body immediately with levels of absorption that vary over time allowing multiple dosing to provide an effective daily dosage protocol.
Proin ER Tablets provide a steady absorption while maintaining a safe and effective concentration of medication in a single daily dose.
Both Proin forms are equally effective when given as prescribed. Dogs may transition from Proin Chewable Tablets to Proin ER without a breaking in administration. Do not, however, alternate betweeen Proin Chewable and Proin EF because the safety of interchangable use has not been evaluated.
Proin ER comes in four convenient sizes:
Dosage and Administration:
- 18 mg: 10-20 lbs
- 38 mg: 21-40 lbs
- 74 mg: 4-80 lbs
- 145 mg: 81-125 lbs
The total recommended dosage for oral administration is 2 to 4 mg/kg (0.9 to 1.0 mg/lb of body weight once daily. Do not split or crush tablets. Administer with food.
If clinical response is poor, the initial diagnosis should be reconsidered. For this drug to be effective, it must be administrated as directed. Missed doses will negate its effect.
Caution: May cause excitability and restlessness. Do not use in animals with pre-existing medical conditions (e.g. cardiovascular disease, hypertensive disease, renal insufficiency). Do not use in animals taking cardiovascular medications or any other sympathomimetic agents.
Sympathomimetics may produce a wide range of effects, most of which mimic the results of excessive stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system. Side effects include anorexia, restlessness, irritability, tremors, tachycardia, cardiac arrhythmia, hypertension, vomiting, diarrhea, panting and urinary retention.
Do not exceed the recommended dose. Higher dose can result in anorexia, vomiting, tachycardia, disorientation and mydriasis.
If ongoing side effects or urinary incontinence persists or increases, consult a veterinarian.
