Dosing U-40 Insulin With U-100 Syringe
Conversion Chart

Most commercially available insulins are U-100 and the syringes purchased at the human pharmacy are u-100 syringes.  U-100 syringes are designed to provide the proper amount of U-100 insulin.  Likewise, U-40 syringes are calibrated to the proper concentration of U-40 insulin.

U-100 insulin has 100 units of active insulin in each mL (milliliter) of liquid.  U-40 insulin has 40 units of insulin in each mL of liquid.  U-100 insulin is 2.5 times the strength of U-40 insulin.

It it very important to understand how many units of insulin you are giving your pet and the concentration of the insulin you have.  Some pets are receiving insulin that has been diluted 50% to U-50, or specially ordered at this concentration.

If you are using a U-100 syringe with U-40 insulin, you will need use the conversion chart below for the proper dosing amount and adjust for the difference in strength between the two insulin strengths.

To get a specific number of units of U-40 insulin using a U-100 syringe, you must multiply by 2.5, and fill the syringe to that mark.  For example, to get 5 units of U-40 insulin using a U-100 syringe you must fill the syringe to the 12.5 unit mark on the barrel of the syringe.  Confirm with your veterinarian that you are doing this correctly.  For your pet's health and safety, be sure both of you understand the number of actual units of insulin verses the unit number on the U-100 syringe.
