Description

Interceptor Plus For Dogs

(milbemycin oxime/praziquantel)

Interceptor Plus by Novartis is a palatable once-a-month chewable tablet for the prevention and control of heartworms and intestinal worms in dogs. Available to dogs and puppies weighing two pounds or greater and six weeks of age and older.

Interceptor Plus is a broad spectrum parasiticide that prevents heartworm disease (Dirfilaria immitis) in dogs as well as treats and controls roundworms (Toxocara canis, Toxascaris leonina), whipworms (Trichuris vulpis), and adult tapeworms (Echinococcus granulosus, Dipylidium canium, Taenia pisiformis).

  • Milbemycin oxime interferes with nerve transmission in heartworms, roundworms, hookworms and whipworms.
  • Praziquantel causes muscle spasm in tapeworms which allows intestinal enzymes to attack and disintegrate the worm. It kills all intestinal forms of tapeworm except for Spirometra spp, which requires a higher than standard dose.

Dosage and Administration
The tasty chicken-flavored chewable tablet may be offered to the dog by hand or added to a small amount of dog food. Administer once a month on the same date and for at least 6 months after exposure to mosquitoes. If the dose is overdue by less than 15 days, treat immediately and resume monthly dosing.

Body Weight Milbemycin Oxime per chewable Praziquantel per chewable Monthly Dosage
2 to 8 lbs (Orange) 2.3 mg 22.8 mg One Chewable
8.1 to 25 lbs (Green) 5.75 mg 57 mg One Chewable
25.1 to 50 lbs (Yellow) 11.5 mg 114 mg One Chewable
50.1 to 100 lbs (Blue) 23 mg 228 mg One Chewable
Over 100 lbs Administer the appropriate combination of chewables

If a dose is missed by 15-30 days, heartworm prevention can be maintained if treated immediately and monthly dosing resumes for at least the next 2 months. If a dose is missed by greater than 60 days, dosing may be recommenced and a blood test for adult heartworm must be performed after 6 months. Prior to administration of Interceptor Plus, dogs should be tested for existing heartworm infections.

Federal (USA) law restricts this drug to use by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian.
